Scenarios from 60 Msc. Students!

Some of the 60 Msc. students

We recently finished a cooperation with Chalmers, a technical university in Göteborg.

We produced 10 different subjects that is of interest for Volvo. They had 10 groups with about 6 students in each group. The task was to present 4 future scenarios for each of the subjects with the use of scenario analysis. The time frame was set to 5-10 years. Some examples of the subjects are “Human Computer Interfaces”,  ”Megacities”, “Driverless Vehicles” and “3D Print”.

Martin Börjesson from futuramb first had a lecture about how to create these future scenarios. The students had 2 weeks to work with the scenarios.

The result was over my expectations and can be seen here, if you are behind the Volvo Firewall.

It is always refreshing to get a second opinion about the subjects that we are studying. I think this is a good example of a win win cooperation between university and industry.

From Vision to Reality – Innovation Exhibition at Volvo Group

Two weeks ago the team was involved in three-day long exhibition for people within the Volvo Group. The exhibition was coordinated from Group Trucks Technology and the purpose was to share interesting projects and prototypes between the function and units. Different sites all around the globe participated and we from Volvo IT, TWBI showcased seven different business innovation prototypes; covering many fields. We also participated in the seminar sessions in which two from the team spoke about how we go from vision to reality which was the theme for the entire event. I really enjoy these sessions where you have opportunities to meet and to discuss with peers within the Volvo group. Personally I had many interesting dialogues which hopefully can lead to interesting collaboration activities in the future.

JAM IT – Volvo IT global innovation jam

Following up on last succesful JAM where our employees generated 274 really good ideas, we decided to start our 2011 global innovation jam, “JAM IT” this week.
All employees around the world (35 sites) are invited to collaborate together virtually to generate new ideas.
Our employees have the possibility to contribute with ideas, comment & build upon each others ideas and also invest in the best ideas – i.e. the “crowd” will decide upon the top 20 ideas that will move on to the next stage.

It’s so exciting to follow & contribute to this event, a lot of really good ideas, collaboration and discussions between different countries, cultures and departments. Energy & Passion!

Volvo Group TechShow 2011

Last week, our team, TechWatch & Business Innovation, participated in the Volvo Group TechShow, a great full week event, aiming for demonstrating new innovative concepts and solutions that have not yet reached the market. Over 100+ exhibitors, visitors from all Volvo Group BA/BU’s, customers, partners, suppliers, universities external press etc.

Our small team, TechWatch & Business Innovation, had these stations;

  • Connected Mechanic
  • iMONT
    • The prototype explores new ways to present information to the assembly worker through the use of Smartphones. Enabling the user to get personalized data at the right time and at the location it is needed – saving time and improving quality.
  • Roadmapper
    • We explored new methods and technologies for visualization of business and technology roadmaps. By utilizing new innovative ways to interact with data we added value for all stakeholders working with these plans at Volvo.
  • Serious leap / game on lean manufacturing
    • A prototype that explored the potential of game-based learning, both from a technical and business value perspective.

Relaxed and greener commuting

EU-project funded project Satre (Safe Road Trains for the Environment)  is planning to have a real-world test of this system with a single following car by the end of 2010 and if this means that we can fiddle with our iPad or other Pad’s,  while “driving” to work every morning, it does seem rather attractive. The development is ongoing and will continue until 2012, with a five-car road train envisioned as the final project goal.
